The Psychology of the 'Buy Now' Button: Why Words and Placement Beat Colors
People love arguing about button color. Color matters least. Contrast, wording, placement and what happens next matter far more.
Contrast, not color
The button should be the most visually distinct thing on the screen. Whether that's blue or orange depends entirely on everything around it.
Write the button from the visitor's side
'Submit' describes your database. 'Get my free quote' describes their outcome. First person wording usually wins: 'Send my photos,' 'Book my estimate.'
Reduce the perceived cost of clicking
A line under the button doing the reassurance work — 'Takes 30 seconds. No obligation. We usually reply within an hour.' Removing anxiety beats adding urgency.
Placement and repetition
Once above the fold, again after you've explained the service, again after proof, again at the end. People decide at different moments; be available at all of them.
Trust sits next to the button
Review count, years in business, license number, a real photo of the person who answers. Proof placed beside the action is worth more than proof on an About page.
